한나 아렌트에 있어서 말과 판단의 보편성 문제 = 『예루살렘의 아이히만』을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은『예루살렘의 아이히만』에서 아렌트가 보여주고 있는 말(speech) 개념에 대한 이해를 통해 아렌트의 사상이 함축하고 있는 보편성의 수준을 드러내는데 그 목적이 있다. 벤하비브가 아렌트에 대해 “탈근대적 근대주의자”라고 부른 것은 아렌트가 근대적 합리성 개념에 대해 갖고 있는 묘한 이중적 입장을 드러내기 위한 것이었다. 번쉬타인이 아렌트에 대해 결코 공동체주의자도 될 수 없고 그렇다고 자유주의자도 될 수 없다고 말했을 때도 궁극적으로 합리성이 내포하는 보편성의 문제에 대한 아렌트의 묘한 태도를 가리키는 것이다. 아렌트는 보편적 타당성과 보편적 설득력의 중요성을 강조하지만, 이 보편성은 근대적 이성개념으로 설명되는 것이 아니라, 말을 통해 구체적인 삶의 맥락 속에 있는 인간에게 유효한 한에서의 보편성이다. 즉 특수하고 구체적인 차원을 적극적으로 포착하는 보편성을 아렌트는 의도한다. 『예루살렘의 아이히만』에 나오는 이상주의 비판과, 아이히만의 정신적 문제점을 지적하기 위해 설명하는 말 개념, 그리고 이 책이 서술되는 형식인 이야기하기 방식이 보편성에 대한 아렌트의 이해를 드러내 주는 예들이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article tries to show what the universality implied in Arendt’s thought is like by an understanding of her concept of speech. When S. Benhabib described Arendt as "a post-modern modernist", she intended to show a mysterious position of Arendt’s toward the modern concept of rationality. When R. Bernstein said that Arendt cannot be a liberal as well as a communitarian, he also meant the same as Benhabib. Universality, according to Arendt’s political thought, is not a modernist one based on rationality, but she tries to show that the universal validity and persuasiveness should be based on the humanness of those who stand on the earth. In other words, universality should embraces particular and concrete aspects of human life. Arendt’s criticism of idealism, her concept of speech adopted to use Eichmann’s mental problems, and the story-telling technic which she employed in writing Eichmann in Jerusalem are the examples that show the uniqueness of her conception of universality.
