정보과에서 데이터의 의미에 대한 반정(反正) = Rebuttal of the Meaning of Data in Informatics

국문 초록 (Abstract)

정보과에서 용어 ‘데이터’와 ‘정보’에 대한 논의는 DIKW 피라미드에 근거한다. 이에 본 연구는 학문적 관점에서 DIKW 피라미드의 근거를 파악하고, 정보과에서 사용하는 ‘데이터’와 ‘정보’가 DIKW 피라미드에 적합한지를 논의하기 위한 목적으로 진행되었다. 자료와 데이터의 구분은 외국어의 번역, 외래어의 의미 전달 등의 관점에서 논의하였고, DIKW 피라미드에 근거하여 데이터가 의미를 갖게 되면 정보가 되는지를 살펴보았다. 논의 결과, 첫째, 용어 ‘데이터’는 자료라는 단어와는 차별성이 있다는 것, 둘째, DIKW 피라미드는 정립되지 않은 이론이며, 정보과와는 학문적으로 적합하지 않았다. 즉, 정보과의 교과서에 제시된 정보와 데이터의 위계는 근거가 미약하였다. 본 연구는 DIKW 피라미드에 갇혀 정보과의 중요한 용어인 ‘데이터’와 ‘정보’가 정확한 의미로 사용되어야 한다는 것을 학문적으로 논의했다는 데 의의가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The discussion of the terms "data" and "information" in the field of informatics is based on the DIKW pyramid. This study aims to investigate the academic foundations of the DIKW pyramid and to discuss whether the terms "data" and "information" as used in informatics align with this model. The distinction between materials and data was explored from the perspectives of translation and the conveyance of meaning in foreign words. Furthermore, the study examined whether data becomes information when meaning is assigned to it, based on the DIKW pyramid. The results of the discussion are as follows: First, the term "data" is distinct from the term "materials." Second, the DIKW pyramid is an unestablished theory and is academically incompatible with informatics. In other words, the hierarchy between information and data presented in informatics textbooks lacks sufficient foundation. This study is significant in that it academically discusses the necessity of using the important terms "data" and "information" in informatics with their correct meanings, rather than being constrained by the DIKW pyramid.
