This study investigated the current status of the origins and development of psychoanalysis in Korea in order to establish the discipline as an academic discipline. As a result of the study, psychoanalysis was introduced from Japan in the 1920s and revitalised as a general liberal arts discipline, but since the 1990s, academic interest has increased with a steady increase in monographs, journals, and dissertations, and in the 2010s, master's and doctoral degree courses were established at universities and analyst training courses were established at various institutes and academies. Currently, Korean psychoanalysis is undergoing a popular renaissance and can be seen as a step towards establishing an academic foundation. Second, Korean psychoanalysis conducts clinical training for being analysts at research institutes, and each graduate school has a different focus, including philosophy and art, counselling education, and psychoanalytic concepts. Therefore, future psychoanalysis should move toward the psychopathological perspective had pursued by Freud for a practical approach to clinical practice. In this regard, we expect academic approaches to the process of human growth and maturation, the treatment process of psychopathology formation, and healthy working life.
