아리스토텔레스에서 운동과 활동의 관계 = The Relation between Motion and Activity in Aristotle - focused on a house-building -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

아리스토텔레스는 운동과 활동을 구분했는데, 이 구분은 여러 행위들을 운동과 활동 중 어느 하나로만 분류할 것을 요구하는 배타적 구분처럼 해석되기 쉽다. 그러나 이렇게 해석할 경우 그의 몇몇 언급들 간에 해소되기 어려운 충돌이 일어날 뿐 아니라, 아리스토텔레스 자신이 하나의 행위에 두 개념을 모두 적용한 곳도 적지 않다. 그러니 어떻게 하나의 행위가 운동일 수도 있고 활동일 수도 있는지 그리고 운동과 활동이 어떤 관계를 맺고 있는지 묻게 된다. 바로 이 물음에 대해 답하는 것이 본고의 목적이다. 단, 본고는 아리스토텔레스가 운동의 대표적 사례로 꼽은 집짓기를 주로 살펴보면서, 이것이 어떻게 활동이기도 한 지 설명할 것이다. 결론적으로 본고는 집이라는 형상을 갖추어 가는 사물인 집재료 안에서 벌어지는 일에 초점을 맞추면 집짓기가 운동으로 이해되고, 집짓는 자의 영혼 능력인 건축술의 실현에 초점을 맞추면 집짓기가 활동으로 이해된다고 주장할 것이다. 마지막으로 『형이상학』 9권 6장 1048b18-35행을 둘러싼 최근의 논의를 소개하면서, 이 행에 제시된 사례 분류를 고정적인 것으로 보기 어려운 이유를 서술할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Aristotle distinguished an activity from a motion, and we are apt to take this distinction as exclusive one which demands us to classify an act into only one of the two. But if this is exclusive one, there will be some conflicts between his assertions in many places of his works, and what’s more, he himself often regarded an act as a motion and also as an activity. How can be an act regarded as either one? What is the relation between motion and activity? This paper tries to answer such questions. I focus mainly on the house-building which is a typical case of motion, and explain how this act can also be an activity. This act is an activity because this is the realization of soul faculty, i.e., the art of building, and is also a motion because this faculty is realized in the building materials which are moved to be a house. Lastly, with an examination of the recent studies on Met. 9.6, 1048b18-35, I show the reason why it is difficult to see the distinction of acts in that passage as fixed one.
