아리스토텔레스의 본성 개념과 공동체의 목적 = Aristotle’s Conception of Nature and the Purpose of the Community

국문 초록 (Abstract)

아리스토텔레스는 『자연학』에서 “자연은 헛된 일을 하지 않는다.”고 말함으로써, “모든 자연물들은 외적 방해물에 의해 방해되지 않는다면 그것들의 본성을 반드시 실현한다.”는 목적론적 견해를 강조하며, 이러한 견해는 예외적인 경우를 인정하지 않는 절대적인 명제처럼 보인다. 실제로 자연물에 대한 이러한 목적론적(본성론적) 견해는 생물에 대해 논의하는 『영혼에 관하여』에도 거의 그대로 적용된다. 하지만 『니코마코스 윤리학』에서 언급되는 ‘탁월성’ 개념이나 『정치학』에서 언급되는 정치가와 입법자의 역할은 그 목적론적 견해 속에서 일관되게 해석되지 않는 것으로 보인다. 즉, 그의 논의에 따르면, 행복의 획득에 필요한 탁월성이 필연적으로 습득되지 않으므로 결국 행복의 획득도 필연적이지 않으며, 또한 바람직한 국가의 실현에 필요한 정치가와 입법자의 역할이 항상 올바르거나 적절하게 수행되지 않으므로 결국 국가의 목적 실현도 필연적이지 않은 것으로 나타난다는 것이다. 아래에서 필자는 아리스토텔레스의 목적론적 견해가 무엇인가를 먼저 밝힌 뒤에, 행복에서 ‘탁월성’의 역할을 검토하여 이를 국가에서 ‘정치가와 입법자’의 역할과 비교함으로써, 국가가 자연적 또는 본성적이라는 『정치학』의 ‘자연적 공동체’ 개념이 그의 목적론적 체계 속에서 일관되게 설명되지 않는다는 결론을 제시한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Aristotle’s teleological views developed in the discussion of natural beings in the Physics are consistently applied on the whole to his discussion of animate beings in the De Anima. However, the conception of ‘excellence’ in the Nicomachean Ethics as well as the conception of politician and legislator in the Politics appear to be inconsistent with and, indeed, to violate such views. That is, Aristotle holds the view that ‘Natural beings will actualize their natures insofar as there are no external obstacles.’ by saying that ‘Nature does nothing in vain’, whereas, if the attainment of excellence is not absolute, happiness which requires it as a necessary condition will not be attained. In the same way, the presence of politicians and legislators does not guarantee the actualization of the Ideal world. In what follows, I shall illuminate the implications of teleology, analyze the role of excellence in happiness, and conclude that Aristotle’s theory of the state is inconsistent with his teleology.
