중년기 우울 여성의 우울경험에 대한 질적연구 = A Qualitative Study on Depression Experiences of Middle Aged Depressed Women

The purpose of the present thesis is to research the experiences and the meanings of the middle aged women who have some difficulties with the depression. To do the research, I adopted the research method of the narrative inquiry which was developed by Clandinin (2000). I selected 6 middle aged women from the clinic and counselling organization for the interviews and the interviews have been done from September 2008 to April 2009. The 6 middle aged women have been diagnosed with the depression and were still taking some medications for the treatment. I could categorise the life stories into 6 stories through the intensive interviews with the women who have various backgrounds in their lives. The 6 categorised stories are follows; ‘I cannot find myself in my life.’, ‘I have lived my life such as idiot.’, ‘I have lived my life such as slaves.’, ‘I have the huge rock within me.’, ‘I still have lived the past.’, ‘I feel disconnected from the relationship with other people.’ The interviewees could have new insight upon their depressed life through the narrative inquiry process. They also realised the positive aspects within their lives and experienced the recovery in their relationships during the research interviews. I expect that the present research can stimulate the people who are trying to help the depressed middle aged women.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 우울증을 겪고 있는 중년 여성들을 연구의 주체로 참여시켜 그들이 겪는 우울의 경험과 그 의미를 탐색해 보는 것이다. 연구방법은 Connelly와 Clandinin(2000)의 내러티브 탐구(Narrative Inquiry)방법을 사용하였으며, 이를 위해 2008년 9월부터 2009년 4월까지 병원이나 상담기관에서 우울증 판정을 받고 우울증 약을 복용하고 있는 중년기 여성 6명을 개방적 인터뷰 방식으로 심층 면담하였다. 중년기 우울 여성의 삶의 이야기들에서 반복적으로 우울의 경험을 가장 잘 드러낸 이야기는 자아정체성의 상실을 나타내는 ‘내 삶에 내가 없어요.’, ‘바보같이 살았어요.’, ‘노예로 살았어요.’와 소통의 부재를 나타내는 ‘가슴에 돌덩이/바위덩이가 있어요.’, ‘아직도 과거에 살고 있어요.’, ‘주변사람과의 관계가 다 끊어졌어요.’ 등 6가지였다. 내러티브의 재이야기하기 과정을 통해 연구 참여자들은 자신의 우울의 삶을 새롭게 조망할 수 있게 되었는데, 그들은 자신 안에 긍정적인 면을 인정하게 되었고, 깨어졌던 관계가 회복됨을 경험하였고, 오랜 기간의 우울의 경험을 통해 이제야 세상을 깨닫게 되었음을 고백하였다. 본 연구 결과는 중년기 우울여성의 우울 감소와 그들의 정신건강 증진을 위한 개입 방안을 모색하는데 기초자료로 활용할 수 있을 것이다.
