致富談 <귀향>을 읽어내는 다른 시선 - 경영형부농의 허구성과 소농사회론을 중심으로 -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 ‘致富淡’으로 알려진 <귀향>이라는 한문 단편을 소농사회론의 시각에서 재 조망하는 작은 시도이다. 그간 조선 후기 치부담을 읽어내는 역사적 시각 혹은 전제는 모두 경영형부농의 존재 가능성을 인정한 자본주의맹아론의 자장아래 있 었다. 하지만 본 논의는 <귀향>을 조선 후기, 정확히는 18세기 후반 조선 향촌사 회의 경제적 실상을 드러내는 작품으로 보고, 이를 도덕경제와 생계윤리에 입각한 소농사회론으로 살피고 있다. <귀향>은 18세기 중후반 몰락양반의 경제적 현실을 핍진하게 묘사한 작품이다. <귀향>은 더 이상 양반이라는 사회적 계층 혹은 계급 을 유지하기 어려웠던 몰락 양반이 자신의 경제적 어려움을 정확히 깨닫고 현실의 변화에 충실하게 대응한 결과일 뿐이며, 농업을 기반으로 한 주인공의 생계 영위 는 경영형부농과는 관련이 없다. 작품의 주인공 최생이 자신의 재산을 마을 사람 들에게 베푸는 것은 당대 향촌사회의 도덕경제와 생계윤리에 의한 것일 뿐이다. 특히 재난(가뭄, 홍수)이 빈번했던 자연 환경을 생각해 볼 때, 경영형부농의 존재 가능성은 더욱 낮아진다. <귀향>의 최생은 소농사회의 일원으로, 지주의 모습을 보이고 있다 할지라도, 소농사회의 도덕경제와 생계윤리의 규범을 준수해야 하는 존재였을 뿐이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study re-examines the Sino-Korean short story ‘Homecoming’, also known as ‘致富淡 (Managing Wealth Story)’, from the perspective of peasant society theory. Historical perspectives or premises for reading the Managing Wealth Stories written in the second half of the Joseon Dynasty were all influenced by the emergence of capitalism theory, which recognized the possibility of the existence of wealthy managerial peasants. However, this discussion sees ‘Homecoming’ as a work that reveals the economic reality of the rural society of the second half of the Joseon Dynasty, to be more precise in the late 18th century, and examines it in the light of peasant society theory based on moral economy and livelihood ethics. ‘Homecoming’ vividly depicts the economic reality of the fallen noblemen of the mid to late 18th century, who were no longer able to maintain their social class or level of nobility. The story accurately perceives their economic difficulties and faithfully responds to changes in reality. The farming protagonist’s livelihood has nothing to do with the lifestyle of managerial peasants. Protagonist Choe Saeng, bestows his wealth to the villagers merely because of the moral economy and livelihood ethics of the contemporary rural society. The existence of wealthy managerial peasants is less likely, especially considering natural environments where disasters (droughts, floods) occurred frequently. Choe Saeng was a member of the peasant society, and even though he appeared as a landowner, he was merely a person who had to conform to the norms of the moral economy and livelihood ethics of the peasant society.
