Adapting the experimental procedure form Morgan(1983), the present study examined the effect of rewards on an intrinsically interesting activity of solving jigsaw puzzles in kindergartens.
Children in the experimental group received a tangible reward after solving puzzles. Children in the present study, however, did not receive any prior information about a reward. Thus, unlike in Morgan’s study there was no inducement of subject’s expectation of an unpleasant activity due to experimenter’s promise of a reward for the target activity. Also, unlike the previous study of Morgan the present study included an experimental group in that children received verbal rewards after performing the puzzle task. Children in the third condition, the control group, did not receive any reward upon completion of solving puzzles. Subjects in all three groups were presented with an array of play materials including puzzles and were allowed to select an activity of their choice during a free play period given on the next day.
It was expected that in the absence of a prior information about a reward the tangible reward group should not show a decrement in intrinsic interest relation to the control group. It was also expected based on the availability of jigsaw puzzles in the play room of the kindergarten that subjects who had access to puzzles should show less intrinsic motivation of solving puzzles in the free play session of the present study than children who did not have access to puzzles. No specific expectation was advanced with regard to verbal reward group.
A measure of free time the subject spent on solving puzzles and the number of subjects who selected solution of puzzles to commence were taken as dependent variables. As expected, it was found that the tangible reward group did not show a decrement in intrinsic interest relation to the control group on the both measured. Mean times the two groups spent on solving a new puzzle that was presented in the free play session did not differ much from each other. As to the measure of the activity that the child commenced with, there was no significant difference between the two groups. While the verbal reward group spent more time than the other two groups on solution of the new puzzle, the mean differences among the groups were not significant, more subjects in the verbal reward group than subjects in the other two groups chose the target activity to commence with. However, the differences were not significant.
In solution of the puzzle during the play period subjects from kindergartens where jigsaw puzzles were available showed significantly less intrinsic interest than subjects from kindergartens where puzzles were not available. On the solution of puzzles presented in the initial session of the experiment subjects under the kindergarten condition where puzzles were not available needed significantly more time than subjects under the condition where puzzles were available. There was an unexpected interaction between the availability of puzzles and sex. With the first of the puzzles presented in the session of the experiment, girls required more time than boys did in solving the puzzle under the kindergarten condition in that puzzles were not available while boys required more time than girls did under the condition in that puzzles were available.
