Among the five constructs of the 7th National Preschool Curriculum, the importance Health Life Area cannot be overemphasized. Young children`s health and safety are the precursors of overall development and growth. This study was designed to explore the profiles of Korean pre-service teachers` instructional competencies in Health Life Area. Also, it was examined if participants` characteristics(majors, years of study, general knowledge of national curriculum, and experiences with children) were associated with their instructional competencies. The participants of this study were 160 university students who were majoring in early childhood education or early childhood special education. According to the results of this study, variables which had been regarded as having relationships with teachers` self efficacy such as experiences with children, majors, and education levels(years of study in universities) were associated with pre-service teachers` instructional competencies in Health Life Area education. Pre-service teachers majoring in early childhood special education had higher levels of competencies than pre-service teachers majoring in early childhood education. This may reflect curriculum differences between two majors (early childhood education and early childhood special education). Course credits taken by participants about health education or satisfaction with the courses were not associated with instructional competencies. It suggests that the effectiveness of courses for health education in teacher preparation programs should be re-examined.
