계미통신사(癸未信使)의 통역들,노트 = Translators and Notes of Kyemi Tongsinsa (the delegation to Japan)

This paper researched and emphasized on activities of translators(chief envoy`s main translator) and relation with ability inquired for translating. According to an orthodoxy, main translators with Kyemi Tonsinsa were not good at ability of Japanese. Because a sentence like their abilities did not reach to previous good translators proved this situations. However abilities to require for translators going with Tongsinsa were not only ability of Japanese. Like things that was revealed on murdering Choi Cheonjong, negotiation ability extracting valuable contents and information from the others was also important ability to inquire for translators. Though their normal ability of Japanese, thing that main translator got admired from chief envoys had something to do these situations. Also, communications were formed in the field of conversation by writing such as questions and response through Chinese letters without people who learned other country`s language like a Joseon-a-tongsa(Joseon language translator) and Yoehakyeokgwan (Japanese translator). And contents like contact of office works were possible with conversation by writing. When the group of Tongsinsa headed for Okajami(岡崎) from Narumi(鳴海) on February fourth Gabsin year(1764), Won Junggeo delayed because going toilet. When he came out of the toilet, lines of the group were invisible. Only a palanquin to be rid by Won Junggeo was there, workers to shoulder that were invisible. Over considerable time, when a Japanese official showed there, Won Junggeo did conversation by writing on his palm with Chinese letters. Therefore he solved this problem. Translation between modern Japan and Joseon proved that ability of Chinese letters existed in their relation as a official language. Therefore in the view of capabilities including this negotiation ability, once conversation by writing was watched as a method to aid, the negotiation ability itself didn`t fall behind compare to previous translators. New estimation of main translators going with Kyemi Tongsinsa could be possible.
