Ming(命) refers to the path of life for each human being, and even if certain aspects of this path might be predetermined at birth, each mind should be guided by one’s values. The life that each person strives to realize one's values is closely tied to each person's will. Individuals who are autonomously aware of their Mings(命) can, even under given limitations and challenges, make rational decisions based on their values at the moments of choice, thereby maintaining the consciousness of being alive and living at every moment. Living as a complete self with autonomy and striving to live humanely to the best of one’s ability requires continuous self-awareness and efforts to establish one's identity. The distinction between objective constraints and subjective awareness is a significant issue that must be addressed from a fatalistic perspective.
My destiny is to become myself. Accepting one’s fate and creating something meaningful from it ultimately shapes my destiny. If my decisions actualize my destiny, it means that it is my freedom that makes my destiny my destiny. The being called “I” is unique in the universe, and this existence is defined through one's own life. “Defining by myself how I will live my life" is only possible when free will is presupposed. Even if there is something inevitable and unchangeable, as suggested by the dictionary meaning of fate, destiny can be understood as a series of life processes that aim to achieve a "better self" through a autonomous life based on free will.
“Knowing the Mandate of Heaven(知天命)” in the Analects of Confucius means awareness of cosmic order as a standard for human existence and value judgment, thereby focusing on our current life and social relationships and valuing each person’s role and personal growth. For Confucius, living according to the Mandate of Heaven was equivalent to fulfilling one's mission(Shìmìng, 使命), which became the destiny he must overcome. The “meaning of existence” for an individual lies in the process of finding one's “mission”, and this process can be said to be life. Each person must be aware of the destiny they are creating and strive to be reborn as a “better self”.
The phrase “Heaven has bestowed virtue upon me” implies that when we are born as humans, we are already given the obligation to develop the virtue inherent in each person. The manifestation of the will to faithfully fulfill its obligations relates to each person's perception and awareness. Thus, human autonomy can be considered inevitable. With autonomy, humans can shape themselves. In order to live a life with autonomy, one must have confidence and conviction in one's choices and the ability to put those choices into practice. Therefore, Confucius emphasized the importance of “Knowledge(知)” and “the Unity of Knowledge And Action(知行合一)”. With the statement “Human natures are similar to each other, but habits make us different.”, Confucius underscored the significance of sincerity, effort, and practice with consistent words and actions and cautioned against laziness and complacency. Hence, the changes through continuous effort and practice require a strong will and the practice of “Self-discipline(克己)”.
In modern times, people freely and creatively pursue mental maturity and growth as an independent being, but an integrated self that can balance one’s responsibilities and obligations considering social values and order is needed. The philosophical ideas and teachings of the past cannot be uniformly applied to everyone and each individual must reflect on and explore their own life and existence to establish self-identity and form an “integrated self” suitable for each person. Within social relationships, it is also crucial to understand and respect each other through the principles of loyalty(忠) and empathy(恕), maintaining harmonious human relations through mutual consideration thereby building personal trust to create a peaceful society.
I am confident that Confucius’ understanding of Ming(命) presented in 『The Analects』 can offer valuable lessons for modern attitudes toward destiny, despite social, cultural, and environmental differences. This is because humans have free will and need practice and self-cultivation to realize their positive desires for self-development, growth, and “being themselves”. Life involves making choices through self-identity and free will, and one must take responsibility for those choices. Ther efore, one should not live recklessly and should strive to make the most of every moment.
Through this process, one can gain a deeper understanding of life's journey and contribute to building positive social relationships by leading a healthier and more fulfilling life through self-growth and development.
