Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effect of university students’ understanding of sports safety knowledge on sports accident prevention behaviors, mediated by perceived importance of safety education, and to test the moderated mediation effect of exercise ability level in this relationship.
Methods: The participants were 1,062 university students who took part in the 2024 Sports Safety Accident Survey conducted by the Sports Safety Foundation. Data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics 28.0. Descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis, and reliability coefficients were calculated to verify the validity and reliability of the measurement instruments. Differences in study variables according to background characteristics were examined using independent-samples t-tests and one-way ANOVA. The relationships among variables were analyzed using the SPSS PROCESS macro (Model 4 and Model 8).
Results: First, significant differences were found in understanding of sports safety knowledge, perceived importance of safety education, and sports accident prevention behaviors according to students’ background characteristics. Second, university students’ understanding of sports safety knowledge had significant positive effects on both perceived importance of safety education and sports accident prevention behaviors, with perceived importance of safety education partially mediating this relationship. Notably, the indirect effect was strongest among students with lower perceived exercise ability, indicating that the process through which sports safety knowledge translates into prevention behaviors varies depending on perceived exercise ability level.
Conclusion: These findings suggest that, to prevent sports accidents among university students, educational approaches should focus not only on delivering safety knowledge but also on enhancing students’ recognition of the importance of safety education.
