This study aims to classify the types of subject’s gaze and analyze the imaging aspects of memory, focusing on Kim Myeong-in’s poetry. ‘Memory’ does not contain the contents of a specific past event, but rather lies latent within the subject in a forgotten state. ‘Gaze’ in poetry is a kind of physical act that consciously perceives forgotten memories and makes them temporally present. It appears as a perceptual action that complexly connects the relationships between multiple images divided from the continuity of time. Accordingly, the types of subject's gaze and the imaging aspects of memory can be classified into three ways as follows.
The content to be covered in Chapter Ⅱ belongs to the first type. It is a type of ‘horizontal move’ of gaze that embodies the contrast or chain reaction of ‘fragmented memory’. This is revealed in the way that a new screen is created on a single screen as the subjective image within oneself overlaps with the image given objectively from the outside. Poetry complexly accepts gaps in time and deals with changing aspects of relationships. It maintains the heterogeneity and individuality of various beings, grants continuity of time to the same layer, and expresses a diversified scene. The first section, focusing on the contrastive expression of memory, consists of the changes in the foreground and the background, and the sense of the temporal gap within it. Changes in the dichotomized scene appear in a way that brings out the object of memory in a new way or multifacets the space that was latent within the subject. Accordingly, the phenomenon of memory appears in the form of embodying the object of the memory source in a new form or diversifying the layers of the memory space latent within the subject. The second section, focusing on the scene being reconstructed in a panoramic manner, describes the individual relationships and solidarity of various beings, and the expansion of present consciousness. Based on this, the coexistence of time is embodied at the internal level as a method of overlap and diversification through identification of the subject, and at the external level as a process of linking various objects and expanding the circumference of consciousness. Lastly, the content of the third section identifies the meaning that the posteriori combination of memory scenes through the production of this gaze achieves the coexistence of multiple subjects in the poem.
In Chapter Ⅲ, the second type of gaze appears as ‘vertical intersection’ and shows the process by which ‘foregrounded memory’ are repeated or juxtaposed. The vertical cross gaze embodies the spatial connection between under-the-ground and on-the-ground, based on rising and falling movements. Rather than belonging to only one side of the division into rise and fall, death and life, unreality and reality, etc., poetry embodies the relationship of existing time and disharmony based on the internal exchange pattern. The content of the first section deals with the expression pattern that reflects the view of entire life and the sense of wandering, focusing on the gap revealed by the upward and downward movements. The gap between rise and fall sometimes shows a point that suggests the subject as an alienated object through symmetrical repetition, and also represents a signal of life and self drifting on the ground through fused repetition. In the second section, the upper and lower signifiers are reversely assimilated, dealing with a paradoxical scene in which death is revived into life and its afterlife becomes present. In the poem, the up-and-down gaze implicitly represents the form of death that invades life, and it is also depicted as a process of being exposed to the death latent within oneself through a ghost that appears on the ground. Finally, the third section identifies the poetic meaning of representing the existence of a reflective subject based on the transference and inheritance of memory through the gaze that appears as a signifier of rise and fall.
Chapter Ⅳ follows the gaze of the third type, ‘spiral circulation’, and identifies the process of condensation and divergence of ‘polarized memory’. Based on this type of gaze, the subject's consciousness adopts an ambivalent movement that infinitely converges or expands. It becomes a spiral in which the two poles are not separated but are connected to each other by constantly alternating and repeating the inside and the outside, the surface and the deep layer, and the prograde and retrograde. The first section shows the way into the inner circle of the spiral cycle. Here, the subject's gaze converges and sinks into the source of memory, making a recursive scene. This type of gaze embodies a consciousness aimed at repetitive retrospection, or appears in a way that focuses the subject's consciousness on the silhouette of the invisible reality located behind the scene, and ultimately takes on a process of re-creation. The second section describes how to move out of the spiral cycle. The subject's gaze, which had been sinking inward, now moves on to the process of deviating from the converging flow of the scene, making a leap beyond the vanishing point. This aspect of imaging is revealed through the confusion of the scene, and is realized by the loss of focus and the aim toward de-ending. Lastly, the third section identifies the decentering of memory and the active subject, and from there, reveals the aesthetics of remaining imagery.
As summarized above, this study classifies the types of gaze and imaging memory that appear in Kim Myeong-in’s poetry and identifies the aesthetic specificity of his poetry. And ultimately, this study looks at the possibility of poetic images based on the principle of ‘narrative’(or récit) beyond portrayal and description.
