The objectives of this study are to research through children's unaffected play how young children engage in the play and interact with others according to the different qualities of education and the children's gender and age, to analyze the relation between the children's engagement and interaction, and to introduce the idea of engagement that is considered from the viewpoint of children who are the actual object of the education.
With the above objectives, the following questions were considered. 1. What are levels and types of children's engagement and their interaction in a play according to the quality of early childhood curriculum? 2. What are levels and types of children's engagement and their interaction in a play according to their age? 3. What are levels and types of children's engagement and their interaction in a play according to their gender? 4. What is the relation between levels and types of engagement and the interaction in a play?
For the subjects of this study, "A" kindergarten and "E" kindergarten were selected that got the highest scores and the lowest scores respectively in evaluation of the quality of early childhood curriculum. And, one of 4-year-old children's classes and one of 5-year old children's classes were chosen in the selected kindergartens and 15 children were picked randomly out of each classes.
The tool used far evaluating the quality of early childhood curriculum was questions of "curriculum" in the model for comprehensive assessment of early childhood education developed by Fang Ok-Seung (2001). Additionally, to observe and rate levels and types of children's engagement, "Engagement Quality Observation System III" (E-QualIII, McWilliam, 1998b) developed by Children Development Research Center of North Carolina Univ., U.S.A was used, and to observe the children's interaction, "Holloway and Reichart-Erickson" (1988) was used.
The observed data were analyzed with t-test to find out the relation between levels and types of children's engagement and their interaction according to the quality of early childhood curriculum and children's gender and age.
The results of researching the above questions can be summarized as follows.
First, in researching levels and types of children's engagement and their interaction according to the quality of early childhood curriculum, in regards of levels of engagement, it was observed that children in older groups engaged more frequently in higher level of persistent behavior, symbolic behavior, encoded behavior, and constructive play. Constructive play was shown most frequently in children of older groups. But, children of younger groups engaged more frequently in lower levels of differentiated behaviors, undifferentiated behavior, casual attention, non-engaged behavior, and transitional behavior. Differentiated behavior was shown most frequently in children of younger groups.
In regards of types of engagement according to the quality of early childhood curriculum, children of older groups showed more social interactions with peers or adults than children of younger groups while children of younger groups showed more nonsocial types of interaction such as interaction with themselves or objects.
In regards of children's interaction according to the quality of early childhood curriculum, children of high-quality older groups showed more frequently positive interaction with peers and teachers. Particularly, the positive interaction with peers was more noticeable. But, children of low-quality younger groups showed more frequently solitary play, observation, and transition than children of older groups. Particularly, the solitary play was observed most frequently.
Second, in researching levels and types of children's engagement and their interaction according to children's age, in regards of levels of engagement, 4-year old children showed more frequently symbolic behavior than 5-year old children. And, 5-year old children showed more frequently the behavior encoded by social agreement than 4-year old children with significantly difference.
In regards of types of engagement according to the age, 4-year old children showed most remarkable non-social engagement with themselves than 5-year old children with significant difference.
In regards of the interaction according to the age, 5-year old children showed more frequently the interaction with others than 4-year old children with significant difference.
Third, in researching levels and types of children's engagement and their interaction according to children's gender, the difference between both age groups was insignificant.
Fourth, in researching the correlation between levels of children's engagement and their interaction, the correlation of the two items was remarkable. When children have positive interaction with others, the symbolic behavior and the encoded behavior, that are all higher levels of interactions, was positively correlated with such types of interactions. But, when they were showing interactions such as observation, daydreaming, or transitional behavior, lower levels of engagement such as undifferentiated behavior, casual attention, non-engaged behavior, and transitional behavior was positively correlated with such types of interactions. Moreover, the interaction with teachers was proved to be negatively correlated with children's engagement in differentiated behavior. Therefore, it were considered that the more interaction with teachers, the less differentiated behaviors of children, and that the more children's solitary play, the more children's constructive play that is the higher level of engagement.
Fifth, in researching the correlation between levels of children's engagement and their interaction, there was significant correlation between the two items. Children's positive interaction was positively correlated with engagement in interaction with peers, and positively correlated with engagement in interaction the teachers. And, when children do the solitary play, their engagement was positively correlated with objects, daydreaming, and transition.
