‘2000년 국어의 로마자 표기법’ 표기 방식에 관한 소론 1 = A Study of Korean Romanization Rule in 2000

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to present solutions to the controversial issues on Korean Romanization Rule enacted in 2000. The findings of a survey study with 84 undergraduates led to the following suggestions for the current Romanization Rule. First, Korean Romanization needs to be based on the electromagnatic method. Second, no symbols other than the Roman alphabets should be used. Third, the Korean vowels ‘ㅓ e’, ‘ㅡ u’, and ‘ㅢ uy’ need to be transcribed as ‘eo’, ‘eu’, and ‘eui.’ Fourth, the initial and final sound difference in Korean lax consonants of plosives should be clarified in writing. That is, for a Korean alphabet ‘ㄱ k’, its initial sound should be romanized as ‘g’, and its final one as ‘k.’ Fifth, the Korean fortis consonant ‘ㄱ k’ needs to be romanized as ‘gg.’ Finally, when there occurs a sound shift, its consequence should not be reflected. The unified Romanization Rule should reflect the public’s opinions so that they can easily learn and widely use the Rule. The findings of this study have significant implications for enacting a new easy-to-use Romanization Rule.
