매디슨 공화주의의 정의(定義)와 현대적 의의 = <연방주의자 논고> 10번의 해석과 자유주의·공화주의 논쟁을 중심으로

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper is motivated by a dissatisfaction with the common understanding that Madison's thought of American founding is composed of heterogeneous elements. Overcoming the undue criticism of Madison's thought of American founding, the paper attempts to identify Madisonian Republicanism by explicating seemingly tensional elements of Madison's ideas, and then locates its significance in the contemporary American politics. Firstly, the paper investigates No. 10 of the Federalist Paper, that has been reputed as representing Madison's thought of American founding most succinctly. By analyzing the essay thematically, the paper argues that Madisonian Republicanism attempts subtle combination of republican and liberal values. Secondly, the paper examines so-called liberalism-republicanism debate in the thought of American founders and sheds new light on Madisonian Republicanism in the context of the debate. Finally, the paper seeks a comparative meaning of Madisonian Republicanism in the development of Korean democracy.
