제2차 세계대전 중 타이완인 포로감시원과 통역의 수용소 경험 = Experience in prison camps by Taiwanese prisoner-of-war monitors and interpreters during World War II

국문 초록 (Abstract)

제2차 세계대전 기간, 일본 군대의 모집 하에 수많은 타이완 민간인들이 군속(軍屬) 신분으로 타이완과 태평양 전장 각지의 포로수용소(연합군 전쟁포로수용소)에서 감시원과 통역 업무를 맡았다. 그들은 비록 군인 신분은 아니었지만, 그중 백 명 이상의 사람들이 수용소 근무기간에 연합군 포로들에 대한 그들의 행위가 문제가 되어 전쟁 종결 후 연합국에 의해 체포, 기소되었고 전범 신분으로 심판받았다. 포로수용소 안의 실제 상황에 관해서 전쟁 기간 중 남겨진 자료가 매우 제한적이어서 대부분은 당사자들의 회고를 통해 당시 상황을 단편적으로 이해할 수밖에 없다. 이보다는 전쟁 종결 후, 각국이 1945년~1948년 사이에 남긴 전범재판소의 법정 기록이 상대적으로 관점 상 더 완전하고, 시간 상 사건 발생 당시와 비교적 가까운 자료들을 제공한다. 본고에서는 오스트레일리아의 군사법정에서 심판했던 타이완인 전범에 대한 기록을 통해 타이완인들이 각지의 포로수용소에서 근무했던 정황을 이해하고자 한다. 주로 살펴볼 의제는 타이완인들이 수용소 안에서 행했던 구체적인 근무내용, 타이완인과 일본인 장교/병사 및 연합군 포로들과의 상호관계, 그리고 수용소 안에서의 권력관계이다. 마지막으로 같은 피식민자로서 수용소안에서 타이완인과 조선/한국인 포로감시원들의 경험 차이를 비교하여, 이를 통해 ‘언어 가 전쟁시기 수용소에서 갖는 의미를 탐구한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Under the Japanese colonial rule (1895-1945), the people of Taiwan were mobilized to support Japan’s war efforts throughout the Second World War. A significant number of the Taiwanese served as guards and/or interpreters at POW (prisoners of war) camps across Southeast Asia and the Pacific during the war. After the war ended, a significant number of these Taiwanese interpreters were arrested and put on trial as war criminals by the Allied authorities and subsequently convicted or executed. Based on published and archival materials from Taiwan, Japan, and Australia, this article first examines the work of these Taiwanese at POW camps, particularly their interaction with their Japanese superiors and the Allied prisoners of war. Then it will explores the effect of languages and culture as a critical element defining the Taiwanese’ roles in these camps, and analyzes the multi-layered “power relations” as manifested through such roles.
