    ABSTRACT

    Optimizing Shaft Strength to improve Swing Performance in Golf

    Playing golf can be improved by either professional lesson or custom-made golf clubs to develop swing motion. The five shotmaking factors on a game are distance, accuracy, trajectory, backspin and feeling. These factors can be affected by changing the specifications of the golf club on shot performance which are lie, loft, face angle, sole angle, shaft bend point, face progression/hosel offset, vertical roll, shaft flex, shaft torque, shaft weight, center of gravity, length, shaft balance point and set makeup.
    The optimum shaft strength for swing speed was studied in analyzing the 3-D images of swing robot. The ball speed, vertical angle, flight time, landing angle and distance were measured to investigate the shaft strength of L(ladies=215), R(regular=235) and S(stiff=255), and were resulted in the followings:
    1) In case of club speed 98mph, the ball speed of shaft S(stiff=255) is 147.17±2.67mph, that of shaft R(regular=235) is (145.46±3.05mph)and that of shaft L(ladies=215) is (143.81±2.97mph)
    2) In case of club speed 98mph, the vertical angle of shaft R(Regular=235) is (16.90±1.57°), that of shaft L(ladies=215) is (14.84±1.18°) and that of shaft S(stiff=255) is (13.32±1.70°)
    3) In case of club speed 98mph, the flight time of shaft S (stiff=255)is(6.38±0.03sec), that of shaft L(ladies=215)is (6.89±0.02sec) and that of shaft R(Regular=235) is (7.16±0.02sec)
    4) In case of club speed 98mph, the landing angle of shaft S(stiff=255)is (37.63±0.46°), that of shaft L(ladies=215)is (46.85±0.33°) and that of shaft R(Regular=235) is ( 47.72±0.31°)
    5) In case of club speed 98mph, the distance of shaft S(stiff=255) is (244.37±1.39m) and that of shaft R(Regular=235) is (223.56±1.16m) and that of shaft L(ladies=215) is (213.61±1.83m).

    the optimum shaft strength must be applied to individual differences in body through club fitting and the research of golf swing is needed comparing with the results of 3-D swing robot.
