‘비지배적’리더십 = 마키아벨리의『군주』에 내재된 교육적 수사

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문의 목적은 마키아벨리의『군주』에서 드러난‘잠재적 참주’에 대한 교육적 수사의 내용을 민주주의의 자기 전복적 속성을 억제시키지 않으면서도 안정적인 변화를 가능하게할 수 있는 민주적 리더십의 단초로 재구성하고자 하는 것이다. 세 가지 과제를 수행한다. 첫째, 다수의 의사를 무조건 대변하는 수동적 태도를 취하지 않는 민주적 리더십의 새로운 모델을 모색한다. 여기에서는 현대 민주주의가 당면한 문제를 대중으로부터 분출된 의사를 민주적 심의로 전환시킬 수 있는 리더십의 상실에서 찾고, 민주주의의 자기 파괴적 속성만 강조하는 이론들이 갖는 문제점을 지적한다. 둘째, 기존 연구에서 상대적으로 등한시된『군주』의‘수사적’측면을 재조명하고, 『군주』의 정치적 수사를‘정치적 개연성’과‘다수의 정치’라는 두 가지 범주에서 살펴본다. 셋째, 『군주』를‘잠재적 참주’또는‘권력을 통해 개인의 욕망이나 정치적 이상을 성취하려는 사람’을 가르치는 입장에서 읽었을 때, 마키아벨리의 교육적 수사가‘비(非)지배 자유’라는 관점에서 고전적 참주를 재구성하고 있다고 주장한다. 이 과정에서 그가 기술하고 있는 성공한 참주들로부터 시민들을 실질적인 견제력을 담보한 성찰적 판단자로 승화시킬 수 있는 민주적 리더십의 혜안을 찾아낸다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article analyzes Machiavelli’s teachings of ‘potential’ tyrant in The Prince with respect to its relevance to the construction of democratic leadership that functions to convert the self-subverting quality of democratic politics into a salutary reform. Specifically, it appropriates Machiavelli’s descriptions of ‘new prince’ as a non-dominative leadership whose introduction of a constitutional order would eventually evolve into a princely governing under which subjects enjoy liberty as non-domination. Two arguments are made in this article. First, juxtaposing the self-subverting quality of democratic politics with the need for political leadership which is able to sublimate a revolutionary desire for change into democratic deliberation, I will argue that Machiavelli’s counsel to new princes draws a type of leadership that would evoke loyalty from their subjects without upholding a populist desire for subversion. Second, examining Machiavelli’s pedagogical rhetoric in the sense that it is shaped or needs to educate potential tyrants, I will claim that Machiavelli teachings of potential tyrants revises the ancient notion of ‘tyrant’ in the context of a successful tyrant whose princely governing ultimately serves to realize non-domination which would be most desired by the people.
