브라질-카리브 지역의 아프리칸 디아스포라와 정체성 = The African Diaspora and Identity in Brazil and the Caribbean

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In Brazil and the Caribbean, hybrid identities can be defined as diasporic identities which are configured through colonial rule, regional conflicts, voluntary labor migrations from Asia and Europe, and the World War, including Négritude as a legacy of the African slave trade and the black diaspora. Indeed, the diaspora in this area is not a mere reflection of modern memory and scars, but rather, an ongoing and dynamic process that is constantly being transformed through self-extension and reorganization. Therefore, it would be more appropriate that we understand the cultural identity in this area in terms of the newly reconstituted hybridization processes in accordance with the given social-historical characteristics rather than the hybridity itself. Hence, in this study, we will focus on the historical contexts and processes of the African diaspora formation that gave a vital clue about the hybridization of the Brazilian and Caribbean societies. On then, we will explore their local cultural identities in relation to the ideologies which have emerged through the processes of nation building and social integration. Consequently, this study aims to examine controversial issues about the hybridity in Brazil and the Caribbean.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

브라질·카리브 지역의 혼종적 정체성은 아프리카 노예무역과 흑인 디아스포라를 통해 공유하게 된 흑인성(Négritude)을 비롯해, 식민지배, 지역분쟁, 노동력으로서의 유럽·아시아계 민족의 자발적인 이주, 세계대전 등으로 이어지는 디아스포라의 역사와 맞물린 그야말로 디아스포라의 정체성이라 할 수 있다. 실제로 이 지역에서의 디아스포라는 근대의 기억과 상흔을 반영하는 거울에 그치는 것이 아니라 확대·재편을 통해 지금도 끊임없이 그 모습을 바꾸며 진행 중인 현재적이고 역동적인 과정이다. 따라서 이 지역의 문화적 정체성은 혼종성 그 자체보다는 지역별 특유의 역사·사회적 특성에 따라 새롭게 재구성된 혼종화 과정 속에서 파악하는 것이 보다 합당하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 브라질·카리브 지역 국가들의 혼종화의 단초라 할 수 있는 아프리칸 디아스포라의 역사적 배경과 형성 과정에 대해 조명하고, 이를 바탕으로 이 지역의 문화적 정체성에 대해 국가형성 및 사회통합과정에서 나타나는 이데올로기와의 상관관계 속에서 고찰함으로써 브라질·카리브 지역의 혼종성(hybridity)을 둘러싼 논란의 궤적 및 그 지향점을 살펴본다.
