This study analyzed the contents related to climate change and climate crisis response in the 2022 revised science curriculum through both quantitative and qualitative methods. Based on this analysis, a comparative examination was conducted with the 2015 revised science and the 2022 revised social studies curricula to identify diachronic and cross-curricular differences. The results indicated that the 2022 science curriculum addresses the three domains (climate change mechanisms, climate change phenomena and impacts, and climate crisis response) in a relatively balanced manner, with a strong emphasis on understanding scientific principles. However, the aspects related to social action were comparatively underrepresented. Compared to the 2015 curriculum, climate-related content appeared earlier (beginning in grades 3–4 of elementary school) and with greater frequency increased. While the science and social studies curricula both addressed climate change, they did so from the perspectives of scientific inquiry and civic responsibility, respectively. This distinction was also evident in elective subjects, in which the instructional focus varied by subject. Based on these findings, this article suggests the need to ensure the balanced representation of scientific and social aspects in achievement standards, reconstruct classroom practices to include social action, and develop integrated curriculum designs and instructional strategies that bridge science and social studies for a more comprehensive climate education.
