    Linear alkylbenzenesulfonate (LAS) is widely used as a major component of the laundry detergents these days. A bacterium capable of utilizing sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, a typical form of LAS, as a sole carbon source was isolated and grown to a pure culure. This bacterium was identified as Pseudomonas fluorescens on the basis of the data obtained with the API20NE system. This identification was confirmed by the results of additional tests performed as suggested by the Bergey's manual of systematic bacteriology, vol. 1. A mutant which can not utilized LAS was obtained by the Tn5 mutagenesis of the isolated P. fluorescens L3 strain. The two plasmids of that mutant were identical in length with those of the wild type cells, indicating that the genes responsible for LAS degradation is on the chromosome. An R' derivative of the RK2 plasmid was obtained from the P, fluorescens L3 and was shown to be able to complement the mutation of the Las mutant.
