국제결혼이주여성의 출신국가별 자아정체감 연구 : 마르시아의 정체감 지위이론을 중심으로 = Formation of foreign brides' self-identities according to their nationality in Korea : Based on Marcia’s Theory

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to investigate foreign brides’ self-identity underwent byliving in Korea. Based on Marcia’s ‘identity status theory’, this case studies the lifehistory through interviews of 12 female immigrants living in Jeonnam area; 4 fromChina, 3 from Philippines, 3 from Vietnam, 2 from Cambodia. This study implementedfrom May, 2011 until April, 2012. A total of 20 interviews were carried out in 12months. Grounded on the theory, the interviews involved questions regarding jobs,religions, politics, and the marriage itself. Political related questions were changed tosocietal position related questions; due to the fact the interviewees’ understanding ofpolitical matters was hard to understand.
As the research conclusion, the levels of the foreign brides’ self-identities according tothe Korean situations were studied and depicted from Marcia’s ego-identityachievement, moratorium, foreclosure, and identity diffusion points of view. Whatdetermines these women’s formation of self-identities came down to the cultures ofcountries they were from, the speaking proficiency of the Korean language, the levelof their education, their children’s upbringing and education, the attitude of the othermembers of the family including the husband, and their personal existence within thefamily. This study is not to stipulate the formation of self-identities of foreignimmigrant brides through these few case studies, but to see the obvious characteristicsper case and investigate in depth and give consideration in order to draft policy ofeducation or develop education programs. Also, instead of stereotyping the culturaldifferences, this study seeks to accept the differences existing between the cultures sothat we may have a better understanding of the foreign brides’ ego and adaptationprocess in order to sympathize with them.
