아동청소년 학교생활스트레스가 우울에 미치는 영향과 자아존중감의 조절효과 = The Effects of School-related Stress on Depression among Adolescents and the Moderating Effects of Self-Esteem

This study aims to examine the effects of school-related stress on depression among adolescents. It also focuses on the moderating effects of self-esteem in the process. Data from “A Study on Support Measures for Children and Adolescents Mental Health Promotion in 2012” was utilized for the analyses. The sample consisted of 6,171 students aged from 11 to 16 years old. Multiple regression method was employed to examine the study models. In the analysis, we also examine the differences in the effects of school-related stress on depression between the groups with higher and lower self-esteem. Major findings of the study are as follows. First, school-related stresses from academic and career experiences, peer relationships, and relationships with teachers increased depression. Second, there was a statistically negative relationship between self-esteem and depression. Third, self-esteem has a strong moderating effects mitigating the effects of school-related stresses on depression. Finally, the group with lower self-esteem has stronger effects of school-related stresses on depression compared to the one with higher self-esteem. This study provides discussions on implications of the findings for intervention models at school settings.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

입시위주의 경쟁적 교육 환경 속에서 학교생활 스트레스와 우울은 점차 저연령화되고 그 문제가 심각한 것으로 인식되고 있다. 자아존중감은 중요한 개인내적 보호자원이 될 수 있다는 점에서 그 중요성이 인정되고 있지만, 많은 선행연구들은 청소년기에 초점을 두고 있을 뿐만 아니라 학업스트레스와 우울 사이의 관계만을 살펴보는 한계가 있었다. 이에 이 연구는 초등학교 4학년부터 중학생 시기의 학교생활 스트레스를 학업진로, 또래관계, 교사관계 스트레스로 나누어 우울에 미치는 영향과 자아존중감의 조절효과를 확인하고, 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 아동청소년 정신건강 증진을 위한 실천적 논의를 이어가고자 하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 ‘2012년 아동청소년 정신건강증진을 위한 지원방안 연구’ 데이터를 활용하여 11-16세에 해당하는 6,171명의 학생을 대상으로 분석을 실시하였다. 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학업진로 스트레스, 또래관계 스트레스 및 교사관계 스트레스는 모두 우울에 통계적으로 유의미한 정적인 영향을 미쳤다. 둘째, 모든 학교생활스트레스에서 자아존중감은 조절효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 자아존중감이 높은 집단보다, 자아존중감이 낮은 집단이 학교생활스트레스에서 우울에 미치는 영향력이 높았다. 연구결과에 따라 아동기와 청소년 초기에 자아존중감에 대한 실천적 개입의 중요성을 논의하고, 학교사회복지실천 현장이 아동청소년을 둘러싼 다양한 체계를 대상으로 임파워먼트 실천을 해야 함을 제언하였다.
