The rise of crowdsourcing and web 2.0 environment opens plenty of opportunities for companies who want to exploit the outer power for inner innovation. Implementation of crowdsourcing for product design and development has been more and more attracted by researchers and enterprises. Many cases of successful implementation of crowdsourcing for product design and development such as: Threadless, FIAT Mio, Lego online Factory, etc. have made crowdsourcing become a promising source of innovative power.
In this research, we deploy an experiment on a real crowd of engineering related individuals and investigate how crowdsourcing takes effects on various product design and development phases. The experiment results (1) give a quantitative view of the behavior of the crowd towards various phases of a product design and development process that utilizes crowdsourcing, (2) provide a practical guidance for companies to harness the power of the crowd sensibly, and (3) contribute experimental data for further researches in this field.
