This research was designed to unde rstand characteristics of organizations providing financial counseling se rvices in the U.S. universities and to identify some implications to constitute e ffe ctive strategies and practices in university financial counseling services in Korea
In the U. S. , there a re four universities which provide financial counseling services , and they were selected as res earch su 이 ects for this study. The data were collected using telephone, in-person, faxed , and e-mail interviews with program managers or counselors of the organ ization.
Common missions given by organizations for providing financial counseling services were to empower people to take charge of their financial lives , and to help clients get out of or avoid financial problems , however, each organization has its own organizational goal. Top twe areas. for which they thought their clients normally needed counseling assistance, were ’budgeting and money management’, and ’use of credit and debt reduction’ For fin a ncial counseling, one-on-one, group , telephone. and on-line counseling were currently used , however, all of the respondents conside red one- on-one counseling method to be the most effective Most of the organizations used written directions for counse ling procedure, written forms. financial ratios , evaluation forms. and step- by-step counseling technique for counseling. The mos t frequently indicated attribution of their programs’ success was counselor-related factor , and the most frequently reported challenge for th eir programs' success in the future was funding. From the research findings , several implications wer e suggested to set up financi a l couns eling services for consumers in Korea univer s ities.
