사전적 용어로서의 음악 = Music as a Headword in Dictionaries

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Explanations about the word ‘music’ as an entry vary from dictionary to dictionary while it isused as an effective means of communication in daily life without confusing its meaning. Thispaper proposes a comprehensive overview that analyzes and compares descriptive styles andcontents of explications of music in some representative dictionaries. Accordingly, this articlediscusses differences between verbal definitions which the dictionaries provide under the entry ofmusic. Authoritative music encyclopedias avoid any explicit definition of music in principle. Onthe contrary, language dictionaries give a clear perspective that music is a kind of art based on thevalues of Western culture even though there is a delicate shade of difference between verbaldefinitions in terms of what is the purpose of music and what are constitutive elements of music.
Ultimately, an adequate explanation about music in a Korean dictionary should give considerationto the own historical context of Korean culture.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

음악이라는 말은 일상생활에서 의사소통의 수단으로 불편함 없이 쓰이고 있으나, 사전에수록된 용어로서의 음악은 그 서술 관점에 따라 다르게 설명된다. 본 연구는 음악 백과사전및 언어 사전에 나타난 음악 설명의 방식과 내용을 분석하고 비교하여 그 서술 현황을 정리하고, 사전적 용어로서의 음악이 지닌 공통의 의미와 차이를 도출해 낸다. 음악 백과사전에서의 음악 설명은 독자적 개념 정의를 피하고 역사적 변천을 소개하거나 다양한 언어 사전의 서술 예를 조망하고 있다. 반면, 언어 사전에서는 나름의 개념 정의를 시도하고 있으나, 주로 언어권이 위치한 해당 문화권의 음악 전통에 충실한 설명을 하고 있다. 한국어 사전의 경우,음악에 대한 설명에서 서양의 사전적 정의를 차용하고 있는 것으로 보여, 한국의 실정을 감안한 자체적 용어 설명이 요청된다.
