반도의 숙명: 환경결정론적 지정학에 대한 비판적 검증 = The Destiny of Peninsula :A Critical Examination on the Environmentally Deterministic Geopolitics

국문 초록 (Abstract)

반도(半島, peninsular)의 사전적 정의는 주위가 거의 바다로 둘러싸인 육지의 돌출부를 말한다. 그러나 반도의 지정학적 해석은 단순한 육지와 해양의 분포와 배치를 넘어서게 된다. 국가의 위치가 국가의 운명을 결정한다는 환경(지리)결정론적 지정학은 지정학의 초기 발달단계부터 지정학의 주요한 특징 중 하나였으나, 제 2차대전 이후 논리적 비약과 과학적 근거가 미약하다는 비판을 받았다. 그러나 우리나라의 지정학적 담론 중 하나인 이른바 ‘반도의 숙명’은 이러한 환경결정론적 지정학의 연장선상에 있다. 즉, 한반도의 위치적 특성 때문에 우리 민족은 끊임없는 침략에 시달려 왔으며, 우리의 운명은 외부 세력의 팽창과 수축에 달려 있다는 논리가 반도의 숙명론의 핵심적인 주장이다. 본 논문에서는 반도에 위치한 국가가 그렇지 않은 국가에 비해 대륙세력과 해양세력에 의해 더 빈번한 침략을 받았는가를 실증적 자료를 통해 검증하였다. 나폴레옹 전쟁 이후의 국제 전쟁을 분석한 연구의 결과는 반도에 위치한 국가가 침략에 노출되어 있다는 반도의 숙명론은 근거가 미약한 것임을 보여준다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The definition of a peninsular is a piece of land that projects into a body of water. The geopolitical interpretation of peninsular, however, does not simply mention the location of land and ocean. A geographically deterministic geopolitics that argues the destiny of a state is determined by where the state is located has been a mainstream in the discipline of geopolitics. The geographically deterministic geopolitics has been severely criticized since it was built on logical jumps and weak scientific evidences. The so-called ‘destiny of peninsular’ that is the pivotal discourse in Korean geopolitics, however, shows the strong legacy of the geographically deterministic geopolitics. The key thesis of the destiny of peninsular is Korea has been frequently invaded because of the location of Korean Peninsula. Thus, the argument developed into the statement that the destiny of Korea is determined by the rise and falls of land and sea powers. This study examined whether states located in peninsulas are more likely to be invaded by land and sea powers. Using data that include wars after Napoleonic war, this study shows that the destiny of peninsular receives little support from quantitative evidences.
