The purpose of this study This thesis submitted to Committee of the Graduate School of Education, Cheju National University in partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Master of Education in August, 2008. is to analyze the effects of REBT Group Counseling that makes elementary school children improve their self-esteem and social-skills.
The subject of this study were 20 children in the third grades of Seogwipo T Elementary School. They were divided in two groups, experimental and non-experimental group. The 10 children from the experimental group participated total 10 programs of REBT Group Counseling.
The subjects of the study was to find out the influences of the REBT Group Counseling on the self-esteem and social-skills of elementary school children. The hypothesis of the study was that the self-esteem and social-skills would be improved.
The result of preliminary and post examinations for the group were analyzed by Maston Evaluation of Social Skills WithSocial Skills Rating System(SSRS) for social skills and Self-esteem Inventory by Coopersmith(1967) for self-esteem.
For verification of the program effects in this study, MANOVA and t-test were carried out for pre- and post-score tests between the groups, and repeated-MANOVA, paired t-test and correlation analysis were performed to look into the changes within a group by using SPSS/WIN(version 14.0) in terms of statistical analyses. In statistical verification, a qualitative analysis was implemented through writing an impression report per program session and overall impression report after the completion of the program so as to supplement the limitations of a quantitative analysis.
The findings in this study are as follows:
First, as a result of post-test for the experimental and control groups, and difference verification of post and pre-tests within the experimental group, both self-esteem and sub-factors of self-esteem demonstrated significant differences. The REBT group counseling program used in this study is effective to the improvement of self-esteem and sub-factors of self-esteem(general self-esteem, school self-esteem, domestic self-esteem, social self-esteem).
Second, as a result of post-test for the experimental and control groups, and difference verification of post and pre-tests within the experimental group, both social-skills and sub-factors of social-skills demonstrated significant differences. The REBT group counseling program used in this study is effective to the improvement of social-skills and sub-factors of social-skills(cooperation, assertion, sympathy, self-control).
Third, the correlation between self-esteem and social-skills was analyzed to have a statistically significant positive correlation, which means that the self-esteem increases with increasing social-skills.
In conclusion, the REBT group counseling was confirmed to be effective in improving elementary school students' self-esteem and social-skills. The rational belief that has formed right in their childhood can lead them to right growth and be bases for their adulthood. With this view, the application and development of REBT group consultation program is meaningful to improve self-esteem and social-skills. It also suggests the proper programs providing mutual interchananges help the social nature of the elementary school children improve significantly.
