The purpose of this study is to present the direction of character education in university liberal arts education from the perspective of sustainable development education. This study presented the direction of character education according to changing times through the introduction of sustainable development education into character education in university liberal arts education. The role of sustainable development education in realizing the value of character education in university liberal arts education was shown to provide direction for establishment and practice of core character virtues for nurturing future talent. From the perspective of sustainable development education, the value of character education in university liberal arts education is to pursue a life community based on respect for humans and nature, a life community based on coexistence with humans and nature, and a sustainable community based on harmony between society, the environment, and the economy. From the perspective of sustainable development education, the character education plan in university liberal arts education is to set educational goals of cultivating community capabilities as members of a living community, social adaptation capabilities as members of sustainable communities in terms of educational goals, to construct the education-centered character curriculum, the convergence curriculum of character education and sustainable development education in terms of curriculum, and to establish a regional-based educational environment, a district-based educational environment in terms of the educational environment.
