사회적 공간으로서의 바다 = 해양사회학 서설

국문 초록 (Abstract)

사회학은 지금까지 바다보다 지상에서의 인간 활동을 중시하는 ‘육지편향성(terrestrial bias)’을 견지해 왔다. 하지만 군사적 이점이나 해로 확충을 위한 영유권 분쟁, 혹은 해양 오염, 해수면 상승 및 엘니뇨 현상과 같은 신종 환경위기에 대한 우려가 가중되면서 바다에 대한 관심이 점증하고 있다.
따라서 이 글에서는(1) 사회과학 분야에서의 육지편향성의 기원과 추이를 간략히 개관하고, (2) 해양에 대한 사회과학 연구의 동향을 점검한 후, (3) 해양이지적 탐구 대상을 넘어 새로운 연구 관점으로 발돋움하는 일련의 과정에 대한 분석과 더불어, (4) 디지털 시대에 들어서면서 해양학적 상상력을 기반으로 한 새로운 사회학 패러다임이 절실해 질 것이라는 점을 밝혀보고자 한다.
해양에 관한 사회학적 탐구는 연안지역, 해양자원, 해양산업, 해양분쟁 및 해양사고 등에 대한 연구가 주종을 이루어왔다. 그러나 정보화나 세계화와 같은 거시적 사회변동으로 유동성을 더해가는 근자에 들어와서는 해양을 탐구 대상으로 삼아온 지난날의 연구관행을 넘어선 새로운 해양사회학이 요청되고 있다. 유동성이나 이동성을 감안한 유변학적 관점이 개방화・유연화 되어가는 현대사회의 역동적 현실과 선택적 친화력을 지닌다고 판단되기 때문이다. 그러나 미소한 유전자에서 무한대의 우주에 이르는 만물이 데이터화하는 빅데이터 시대의 도래와 함께 사회활동의 공간이 실세계와 가상세계를 넘나들게 되면서, 체성, 물성 및 운동성까지 포괄하는 혁신적 상상력에 기초한 대안적 패러다임으로서의 해양사회학이 각광받게 될 것으로 전망된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The value of the sea as a social space has long been ignored in sociology due to its strong terrestrial bias. That is why marine sociology has not firmly established as a subfield of sociology yet. Currently, the ocean emerges as one of promising topics of sociological research, since the ocean is now taken to be a repository of natural resources, a zone of international dispute or a site of ecological crisis.
This paper aims to demonstrate the significance of the sociological study of the ocean. After a brief introduction of past marine sociology which used to regard the ocean or costal areas as a main object of inquiry, two additional types of marine sociology is suggested; one is "marine sociology 2.0", a new theoretical perspective taking such characteristics of the sea as fluidity, mobility or liquidity into account in order to make it more appropriate for analyzing dynamic and flexible social reality of today. The other is "marine sociology 3.0," containing special qualities of imagination analogous to those of the deep sea such as volume, materiality and movement, that will do a pretty good job understanding our upcoming society called "the world of big data".
