북한의 낙인관리(stigma management) 전략: 김정은-트럼프 시기(2017~2020)를 중심으로 = North Korea’s Stigma Management: Analysis of Political Dynamics of North Korea-U.S. Relations during Kim Jong Un-Trump Period(2017-2020)

North Korea and the United States have been in a state of normative conflict. The U.S. has made efforts to maintain a liberal international order. In the process, it perceived North Korea as a deviant and threatening state and imposed a rogue state stigma. To the U.S., stigma was a tool to maintain this order. However, stigma became a symbolic and substantive constraint of North Korea to prevent participating in the international community as a legitimate and equal member. In addition, the stigma harmed North Korea's physical and ontological security. Under such circumstances, North Korea has the mission which it controlled the harmful effects of stigma. This study uses the concept of stigma and stigma management to analyze the normative and political dynamics of North Korea-U.S. relations. Furthermore, this study categorizes North Korea's stigma management strategy into four types: stigma recognition(Adoption, Reform) and stigma denial(Disregard and Rejection, counter-stigmatization).
