식민주의의 기초: 존 로크와 아메리카, 인디헤나의 수난사

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 로크의 자연법 이론과 인디헤나의 절멸에서 비롯된 식민주의의 기초를 밝히려 한다. 로크는 자연법을 논리적, 형이상학적으로 전제로 설정하여 자신의 정치이론을 전개한다. 로크는 자연법을 논리적 전제라고 주장하지만, 실질적 연구는 그가 명백하게 북미를 겨냥하고, 실제로 그의 저작에서도 분명히 언급되고 있다. 그의 ‘소유적 개인주의 입장’은 자연상태와 자연법의 상호관계를 토대로, 배제와 절멸의 논리를 펼친다. 소유권을 지니지 않은 사람을 배제하고, 토지를 효율적으로 경작하지 않는 사람들의 소유권을 빼앗고, 이를 토대로 노예제를 정당화하고 절멸의 논리를 펼친다.
부르주아 사회의 소유적 개인주의, 즉 사적 소유권의 사회는 거기에서 벗어나면 존재의 의미가 사라진다. 부르주아의 문화가 아닌 모든 문화를 파괴하는 식민주의는 바로 여기에서 비롯된다. 로크는 이를 처음으로 세속적으로 전개한 최초의 사상가이다.
로크 이후에 식민주의는 18세기에는 인종주의로, 헤겔에게는 보편사의 착종으로, 다종한 문화권에서는 ‘오리엔탈리즘’으로 계속 판형을 거듭했다. 18세기의 서양의 ‘철학사’가 보편사로 확고하게 자리잡으면서 사상과 이론은 서구 일변도의 식민주의와 제국주의의 보편사가 상식으로 통용되었다. 그러나 그 이면에는 제노사이드를 비롯한 인종의 절멸과 삭제 프로그램이 작동되고 실행되었다. ‘존재의 집’이라던 말은 피묻은 사상의 향연을 위한 밑밥에 불과하다. 그러나 거의 절멸된 인디헤나의 생존전략은 여전히 말이다. “우리의 말이 무기입니다.”

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims to elaborate on the foundation of the colonialism, which comes from Natrual Laws by John Locke and the extermination of the indigenous. John Locke develops his political doctrines considering Natural Laws as the logical, metaphysical supposition. He assumes Natural Laws to be the logical presupposition, but is interested in North America. This is evidently seen in his works according to research outcome. His 'possessive individualism' discusses exclusion and extermination, on the bound of natural laws and natural state. The person without possessive rights is excluded, the people without effective farming is forfeited. Then acculturation is the justifying of slavery and suggestive of extermination.
In the possessive individualism of bourgeois society, that is, private property, man is annulled aboard. That is colonialism comes from, which destroys all the cultures but its own cultures. It is Locke who is the first thinker of the imperial. In the thought of Locke found we in profane terminology projected for the world imperial.
