The purposes of this study were to raise questions based on literature researches on programs designed to increase the self-esteem of adolescents and to propose some directions for the development of such programs for adolescents. For those purposes, the study first analyzed the programs designed to enhance self-esteem for elementary, middle, and high school students in the last decade and raised questions around them. Second, the study examined the aspects of the self-esteem growth curve according to grade based on the panel data of Korea Youth Panel Survey(KYPS) and found that self-esteem was in the U-shaped growth curve. Third, the investigator identified explanatory variables affecting self-esteem through literature study and conducted an empirical inspection based on the data of KYPS, thus finding out that self-esteem was influenced by a group of variables including emotion control ability, parental monitoring, parental attachment, school friend attachment, close friend attachment, study-related stress, peer-related stress, appearance and daily life stress, and grade. Those findings suggest that programs designed to enhance the self-esteem of adolescents should be organized based on the explanatory variables affecting self-esteem, proposing appropriate time for program intervention.
