클래식 발레 작품에서 나타난 정치적 올바름 논쟁 = The Political Correctness Debate in Classical Ballet

국문 초록 (Abstract)

정치적 올바름적 접근은 사회 문화 전반의 문제점 지적에서 나아가 클래식 발레 작품에 나타난 쟁점들을 수정하는 작업으로까지 이어지는 추세이다. 예술가들이 자신의 의견을 개진하여 원작에 대한 정치적 올바름적 태도로 작품을 재해석하고자 하는 시도는 보수적인 무용 집단 안에서 이루어진 진보적인 발전으로 확인된다. 이에 따라 클래식 발레 작품 라바야데르, 호두까기 인형, 페트루시카를 정치적 올바름의 관점으로 살펴보고 논쟁의 과제를 파악하고자 했다. 세 작품에 나타난 공통적 논쟁은 서양 중심적인 논의로 인해 발생한 인종주의적 표현의 문제와 민족주의적 해석의 문제로 귀결되었다. 정치적 올바름적 접근을 통해 논쟁의 과제를 해결하는 대안으로서 세 가지 논의를 제안하고자 한다. 첫째, 수정주의적 관점에서는 논쟁의 표현 방식을 수정하거나 제거함으로써 발현되는 논쟁의 요소를 삭제하는 방안이다. 둘째, 원본 그대로를 보존하고자 하는 보존주의적 입장에서는 창작성을 존중하고 시대적 산물로 보존하며 윤리적인 잣대로 평가하지 않기에 원본 그대로를 보존하는 방안이다. 마지막으로 정치적 올바름적 논쟁을 수정, 삭제하거나 원본 그대로를 유지하는 극단 사이에서 절충된 새로운 방향성으로 캐릭터의 정제를 통한 도구적 표현과 능력중시 캐스팅을 제안한다. 예술의 형식은 고정불변 된 것이 아니라, 시대를 반영하는 패러다임을 요구하고 있다는 전제하에 고전 예술이 나아갈 방향성에 대해 정초하고자 하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

A political correct approach tends to lead to the work of correcting the issues in classical ballet works, going beyond pointing out the problems of society and culture as a whole. Attempts by artists to reinterpret their works with a political correct attitude toward the original by expressing their opinions are confirmed as progressive developments within conservative dance groups. Accordingly, this study tries to examine the classical ballet works “La Bayadere”, “The Nutcracker”, and “Petrushka” from the perspective of political correctness and it aims to identify the issues of debate. Common debates about the three works resulted in the problem of racist expressions and nationalist interpretations arising from the Western-centered discussion. This article would like to propose three discussions as alternatives for solving the problem of debate through a political correct approach. First, from a revisionist point of view, it is a way to erase the elements of debate expressed by modifying or removing the expression method of the controversy. Second, from a conservative standpoint, which wants to preserve the original, it respects creativity, preserves it as a product of the times, and does not evaluate it with ethical standards. Therefore, it is a way to preserve the original as it is. Finally, this study proposes instrumental expression and ability-oriented casting through character purification as a new direction compromised between extremes that correct or delete political correct debates or maintain the original. The form of art is not fixed and immutable, but it is intended to lay the groundwork for the direction of classical art on the premise that it demands a paradigm reflecting the times.
