ABSTRACT
A Study on the Formation of Temporal, Spatial, and Cultural Meaning in Video Game Music: Focusing on the Music of Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Genshin Impact
As video games have gradually become an important form of contemporary digital culture, game music is no longer merely background sound attached to visual images. It changes continuously with the player’s movement, exploration, combat, pauses, and transitions between scenes, and it participates in the player’s understanding of game time, spatial environment, and cultural impressions. Taking as its central question how video game music generates temporal, spatial, and cultural meanings in interactive processes, this study proposes the concept of the ‘processual sign’ on the basis of previous research on video game music, musical semiotics, musical narrative theory, and game sound studies. This concept emphasizes that the meaning of game music is not fixed in advance within a single musical piece, but is gradually formed among player action, system triggering, sonic presentation, and auditory judgment.
This study draws on Jean-Jacques Nattiez’s model of the poietic level, neutral level, and esthesic level, and adapts it to the context of video games. It also proposes four sub-mechanisms within the esthesic level: contrast, directionality, expectation, and contextual anchoring. These mechanisms are used to explain how players identify sonic changes during gameplay and, on that basis, judge event progression, spatial position, and scene atmosphere. Within this framework, the study analyzes video game music from three perspectives: temporality, spatiality, and culturality.
The case studies focus on Kingdom Come: Deliverance and the Liyue region in Genshin Impact. The music of Kingdom Come: Deliverance clearly shows how sound participates in the organization of action rhythm, changes in risk, spatial recognition, and the construction of a medieval historical atmosphere. The music of the Liyue region in Genshin Impact, by contrast, mainly demonstrates how regional themes, traditional timbres, pentatonic melodies, and location-based scenes form stable impressions of place and cultural judgments through repeated listening. Through a comparative analysis of these two cases, this study argues that the meaning of video game music does not depend only on melody, mode, orchestration, or style itself, but also on how these sonic materials appear, change, and are repeatedly recognized by players during concrete gameplay processes. In this sense, this study attempts to provide an analytical approach to video game music that is more suitable for interactive media.
