일제 강점기 기독교 농촌계몽 잡지, 『농민생활』을 통해 본 채필근의 종교와 과학관 = Chae Pil Geun’s Views on Religion and Science through His Essays in The Farmer’s Life

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 일제 강점기 기독교 지식인 채필근(1885-1973)이 『農民生活』에 농민 독자들을 향해 쓴 에세이를 중심으로 그의 과학관과 종교관에 대해 살펴본다. 그는 일반적으로 자유주의 신학자로 분류되기에 종교와 과학에 대한 입장이 개방적일 것임을 추측할 수 있다. 그러나 ‘자유주의'라는 편의적 분류 가운데 신학자들을 바라볼 경우, 각 사람의 고유한 사유방식을 간과하게 된다. 본 연구는 그러한 분류식과 선입견을 벗어나는 시도로서, 채필근이라는 인물이 구체적인 역사적 상황 속에서 종교와 과학의 담론을 어떻게 펼쳤는지를 추적한다. 여타 신학, 기독교 전문 잡지나 신문에 실린 그의 글과 달리, 『農民生活』에는 흥미롭고 삶에 바로 적용 가능한 실용적 내용의 글이 담겨있었다. 합리적, 도덕적 삶을 위해 구습을 벗어나 시대의 흐름에 발맞추어 나아가야 한다고 호소하는 글에서 우리는 과학과 종교에 관한 그의 이해 방식을 발견할 수 있다. 우리는 그의 글을 살펴보면서 종교와 과학에 대한 학문적인 논쟁보다, 일제 강점기의 한 기독교 지식인이 당시 구체적 삶 속에서 종교와 과학의 가치에 대해 일상생활에 가깝게 어떠한 방식으로 제시하는지, 양자 관계를 어떻게 설정하는지 발견할 수 있을 것이다. 본고는 먼저 과학관이라는 주제하에 채필근이 조선인의 습관, 관성 중 합리화될 점을 논한 대표적 글들을 집중적으로 살펴본다. 1930년대 초반의 글들을 주요하게 살피지만 필요하다면 같은 시기 다른 잡지에 실린 그의 글을 참조하여 사유방식을 해명하도록 한다. 이후 그가 종교관과 기독교 비판 내용을 살펴본다. 마지막으로 그의 종교관과 과학의 도전에 직면한 종교의 미래를 논의하는 글들을 고찰하며 글을 마무리한다. 그가 종교 현상에 관심을 갖고 그에 대한 논의를 펼친다 하더라도 과학은 반드시 연관된다. 당시 어떠한 현실적 상황을 염두에 두며 주장을 펼치는지 살펴본다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper explores Chae Pil Geun’s perspective on religion and science through his essays from the 1930s, which were published in The Farmer’s Life prior to his pro-Japanese activities. Unlike his other writings in theological and Christian publications, these essays contain practical content that can be immediately applied to daily life. Chae Pil Geun’s essays discuss the need to abandon outdated customs and keep up with modern trends in order to live a rational and moral life. Through this lens, we gain insight into his understanding of the relationship between science and religion. This paper examines how a Christian intellectual during the Japanese colonial period presented the value of religion and science in everyday life. The methodology of this paper involves an intensive review of Chae Pil Geun’s writings on science, with a focus on his essays that emphasize rational thinking and the rejection of old customs and superstitions. While the primary focus is on his writings from the early 1930s, we can also say that his way of thinking remained consistent even after this period. To provide further context, we reference his writings published in other magazines at the same time. Next, we examine Chae Pil Geun’s writings on religion, including his discussions of Christianity and the future of religion in light of the challenges posed by scientific views. Throughout his discussions of religious phenomena, there is always a connection to science. It is important to understand the contemporary context in which he was writing and how he constructed his arguments.
