Humanities-based approaches to management theory and business education have increasingly caught the attention of business leaders and scholars. A dramatic shift toward creative economies and new forms of capitalism in the 21st century require new management theories and teaching methods. Historically, management studies have developed separately from humanities and the arts, since they were governed by scientific methods and a positivist approach during the 20th century. The differences between science and humanities stem from fundamentally different philosophical views and methodological approaches concerning knowledge and human nature. As management and business rely heavily on scientific methods, the cultural differences between humanities and business remain wide. Thus there is a need for exchange and consilience. This article looks at academic exchange and consilience between management and the four main humanities disciplines: literature, philosophy, history, and the arts. Exchange and consilience between humanities and business education are also a major focus of the paper. A literature-based approach to management is in an embryonic stage, while philosophy, history, and the arts have been increasingly adopted in management studies and business education. Yet literature is expected to provide a totally new perspective on administrative and human behavior, given the huge cultural differences. Philosophy, in the form of moral philosophy, has long been the basis of business ethics theory and practice. Common good theory and process philosophy also provide rich arguments for stakeholder views and change management, respectively. History has provided an approach to business that has been popular in business case studies and in the work of business historians. A new area for consilience is the concept of the historicality of business against the neo-liberalistic, ahistorical view of business. Finally, arts-based training has proven effective for organizational and management development. Given the strong demand for creativity and innovation, the time is right for more collaboration between the arts and management. Arts management is an area of adopting management to arts. Humanities have not been well represented in business schools because management scholars and teachers are heavily biased toward scientism. However, humanities-based business and business education will enable business leaders and students to broaden their views, values, and competencies required in this new era.
