Abstract: This study aimed to explore the perceptions of competencies (knowledge, skills, and attitudes) required for practice and the needs for practice operation and educational support among university students preparing to be Health Information Managers (HIM) following their field practice. Open-ended responses were collected from senior students at accredited four-year universities who had completed their field practice, and frequency, centrality, and semantic network analyses were conducted on a final sample of 22 participants using NetMiner. The competencies required for practice were identified in two primary streams: 1) the competency to understand charts and patient records and to classify and analyze diseases and medical procedures, and 2) the competency for field-based information management tasks, such as managing incomplete records and protecting personal information. Regarding practice operation needs, the results highlighted the systematization of mentoring methods and the strengthening of feedback, the specification of practice content (duration, journals, and tasks), ensuring safety, and providing diverse practice experiences. The findings suggest that pre-practice education should integrate medical terminology, chart comprehension, and classification/analysis through case-based learning. Furthermore, there is a need to standardize guidance, feedback, and evaluation criteria, as well as operational elements such as the duration and tasks of the practice.
