This study aimed to investigate career development competencies that are found during the course of career planning of university students majoring in dance. For the study, interviews were conducted with five students who are currently attending, with high grades, and four graduates who used to attend a 4-year university in Seoul, in order to examine competencies that are required for career development. The data collected in this study were as follows: the career development competences of dance students in university were identified and, based on the career development experiences of the outstanding students and graduates, classified into 16 categories in five areas - `self-image improvement, self-knowledge, job awareness and knowledge according to social changes, career opportunities and analysis, and future planning. Based on the findings in this study, career development must be provided as a course for students to effectively nurture various career competencies. In other words, by acquiring competencies that meet social demands, dance students in university can autonomously decide their career from a wider diversity of career options.
