This study tries to explain the expansion of Korean primary education during colonial period. The focus of explanation in the present paper is laid on the educational actions of Korean people. For this analysis, the specific rural region, the Chollabukdo Province which is located in the southern part of Korean peninsula is chosen for case study. Korean peoples of the areas changed its targets of educational actions from traditional primary school, Sodang to colonial primary school, Botonghakkyo after 1919, the year when March-First liberational movement occurred. After 1920s, there were more needs for primary educational opportunities of Korean people than the colonial government intended to supply. And there were movements of the people to raise money and build a school in the area in which they lived. This active movements. of Korean people explains partly the gradual expansion of primary education of colonial Korea. These facts imply that the primary school of colonial period had different meanings to Korean people and the colonial government. To the latter, it should mean an educational apparatus for reproduction of colonial rule. But to the former, it might be a channel for upward social mobility or agenda for acquiring modem knowledges or literary capacities. In this sense, the primary schools of colonial Korea had some aspects of a `contested terrain` between the colonizer and the colonized.
