A significant body of research on the dynamic nature of performance reveals the importance of measuring performance over time with valid dynamic criteria. However, the linkage between the research findings and practical applications in performance management has not yet been satisfactorily established. Empirical research supports that the evaluation based on intellectual ability significantly correlates with performance for around five years, but not for the longer period of time. Focusing on the possibility of long-term performance changes, this article explains the causes of performance inconsistency with the changing task model, the changing subject model, and the situational factor model. The utility and validity of dynamic criteria to deal with these performance changes over time are discussed with a review of previous research findings. Implications for human resource management are suggested in selection, training, and utilizing experienced workers.
