국문 초록 (Abstract)

한국문화와 한국인의 사회적 행동의 이해나 설명에 있어서 체면은 情이나 恨못지않게 중요한 문화심리적 현상으로 취급되어 왔다. 한국인의 체면과 관련해서 부정적 측면을 강조한다. 체면은 그러나 지식인의 존재 이유와 가치를 담보해주는 최후의 보루로, 체면이 상하였을 때 지식인들은 헌걸찬 기질로 목숨을 걸고 이를 지키기도 하였다. 때로는 최고 권력자를 향하여 자신을 기개를 들어냈는데, 각종의 상소문, 선언문, 성명서, 그리고 몸짓이 그것이다. 그리하여 역사의 진보를 가져온 역동적인 힘이 되기도 하였다. 체면은 부끄러움을 아는 마음이라 할 수 있다. 1980년 광주항쟁 시민들은 인간이기에 느껴야만 하는 수치심을 분노로 표출하였다. 부끄러움을 자각한 순간 광주시민들은 인간적 자유를 향한 죽음을 무릅쓴 항쟁을 하였다. 죽은 자는 살아남은 이들에게 광주 문제의 해결을 위해서 무슨 일이든지 하지 않으면 안 되는 열정과 치열함을 남겨 주었다. 살아남은 이들은 살아 있다는 부끄러움과 그로 인한 부채의식에 시달렸다. 그래서 살아남은 이들은 그 가슴앓이를 치유하기 위한 수단으로 갖가지 형태의 분노를 표출하였다. 생명을 내놓은 사람들은 살아남은 사람들에게 부끄러움과 정치권력의 본질이 무엇인가를 인식하게 하였다. 이 역사적 경험은 매우 중요한 것이어서 이후의 진상규명 투쟁과 민주화운동의 원동력이 되었다. 이렇듯 체면, 곧 부끄러움을 아는 마음은 분노의 소금이 되어서 용기로 실천되고 그리하여 인간이 꿈꾸는 세상의 밑거름이 되기도 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In understanding and explaining Korean culture and social behavior of Korean people, Chemyon(kind of face-saving way in English) has been considered as a cultural-psychological phenomenon and important as much as compassion (“Jeong” in Korean) and regrets (“Han” in Korean) in Korea. Its negative side is emphasized in Korea, but Chemyon is like the last stronghold for intellectuals to keep the reason and value of their being. Thus, they would try to keep it willingly at the risk of their life when their Chemyon was damaged. We can see the examples in our history through various letters of appeal, declarations, letters of announcement, and actions against the governments and governors that were unjust or unfair. Thus, Chemyon can be said as the momentum of historical progressiveness. Chemyon is the feeling or sense of shame. Gwangju citizens expressed their human shame in the shape of anger called Gwangju Resist in 1980. As they felt shame as conscious citizens, they resisted for human liberty and freedom at the risk of their life. The dead in the resist left those who were alive passion and intensity to do something for Gwangju in need. Survivors could not escape from the shame of their life and the sense of liabilities, which made them express the anger in various ways to heal the heartache. Those who sacrificed their life in the resist had the survivors recognize what the shame was and what the nature of political power was. This historical experience was important enough to be the motive power of fact-finding mission and democratic movements later. As seen above, Chemyon or the sense of shame is like salt in our society to stop decaying by growing from anger into courage and a support for the world that human beings dream.
