This study aims at developing career coaching program based on strengths, and figuring out the program's influences on career decision self-efficacy and career maturity of elementary students from low income families when applying it on them. This study deals with strengths in the entire program, and through it, it aims at not only forming positive self-image, improving self-esteem for career, exploring the world of interesting jobs and raising consciousness of career, and recognizing the careers but also leading to specific practical plans and behavioral changes by using coaching process. For the study, among students who attend S elementary school in J District in Seoul, where the priority educational welfare support projects are applied, 20 participants who wanted to participate in the career coaching program among 6th graders who are supported for their education were recruited. They were divided into control and experiment groups, and then the experiment group were applied with total 7-session career coaching with 70 minutes, once a week, and then after 2 weeks, the post-session was completed.
In order to verify effectiveness of this career coaching, preliminary, post, and follow-up career decision self-efficacy and career maturity tests were conducted on the experiment group. For analyzing the data and verifying the program's effects, descriptive statistical analysis, frequencies, independent sample t-test, mixed-ANOVA, repeated measure one-way ANOVA were conducted. These results of the study are summarized as follows:
First, career coaching based on strengths had positive influences on career decision self-efficacy of elementary students from low income families, and differences of preliminary, post, and follow-up points were significant but interactions between time(preliminary, post, and follow-up) and groups did not show statistically significant differences. It was confirmed that career coaching based on strengths had significant influences on the interaction between points and groups in career maturity of elementaty students from low income families.
For the suggestions from the results of this study, first, using SAI developed for children, it has utilized strengths fit to levels of elementary students in the entire program. Second, considering special characteristics of low income classes and revising and supplementing the existing career programs, this study is the first study to introduce coaching process. Using strengths, it should help basic data for career education to apply coaching effectively to elementary students from low income families, and then the programs related to careers fit to characteristics of low income classes should be actively conducted.
