Based upon the above review regarding FCGR it is apparent that short fatigue cracks exhibit various growth rate anomalies compared to macrocracks as schematically summarized in Figure 1418. It is apparent that growth rate of short cracks is accelerated and the threshold stress intensity level for propagation is lower than for macrocracks. Short fatigue crack behavior is affected by various factors including material strength, microstructure, mean stress, load ratio, frequency, and environmental conditions. To characterize such anomalous behavior studies should consider these factors; and the modification of the conventional design criteria based upon long cracks should be followed.
