감각의 연합과 그 신경 기전

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 심리학과 신경과학 분야에서 가장 오래된 난제 중의 하나인 결합 문제에 대한 탐구의 일환으로 감각 내에서, 그리고 감각 간에 나타나는 연합의 문제에 정신물리학적 방법으로 접근하려는 시도이다.

[1차년도]
1차년도 기간에는 감각 내 연합의 특수한 사례인 공감각 현상에 집중하여, 한국인에게서 최초로 공감각자를 표집, 이들에 대한 공감각 확인 과정을 거쳐 이후의 연구를 위한 확실한 기반을 마련하였다. 그 성과는 1차년도 기간 내에 연구 재단 등재지인 한국심리학회지: 인지 및 생물에 게재되었다.

조성된 연구 여건 하에서 후속 정신물리학 연구가 활발하게 진행되었다. 이 중 두 건의 실험 연구 성과가 국제저명학술대회에서 발표되었다. 특히 국제 시각학회(Vision Sciences Society)에서 발표되었던 자소의 회전에 따른 공감각색 발생에 관한 정신물리학 연구는 현재 SSCI급 국제 저명 학술지에 투고, 심사 후 수정 과정이 진행중이다.

이에 더하여 1차년도 기간내 연구책임자가 일본에서 개최된 The 3rd International Workshop on Kansei에 초청되어 감각 간 연합의 신경 기제에 대한 fMRI를 이용한 예비연구에 대한 초청 강연을 실시하기도 하는 등 1차 기간 내 연구 성과가 계획한 목표를 초과 달성하였다.


[2차년도]
2차년도에는 1차년도의 성과를 바탕으로 감각 내 연합, 특히 공감각에 대한 정신물리학 후속 연구가 활발하게 진행되었다. 이러한 성과가 제 15차에 국 제의식과학회 (Association for the Scientific Studies of Consciousness 15)에서 발표되었으며, 또한 연구책임자가 신경과학회 (Society for Neuroscience 2011)에 초청되어 연구 성과에 대한 강연을 실시하였다.

또한 계획하여 수행하였던 "의식적 시자각이 공감각 경험에 미치는 영향"에 대한 연구 결과가 부정적으로 나옴에 따라, 본 주제에 대한 지금까지의 상충되는 연구 성과에 대한 이론적 논구의 필요성이 부각되었다. 이러한 작업의 결과가 2차년도 기간 내에 연구재단 등재지인 한국심리학회지: 일반에 게재되었다. 또한 공감각의 지각적 실재성에 대한 연구가 Oxford University Press에서 발간되는 Oxford Handbook of Synesthesia에 챕터로 초청되어 2차년도 기간 내 투고되었다.

2차년도에는 향상된 fMRI 연구 여건을 고려하여, 감각 간 연합의 신경 기제에 대한 fMRI 연구 "상품의 시각 디자인에 암시된 타여 감각 경험이 지각자의 행동과 뇌에 미치는 영향 연구"를 수행하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study takes psychophysical approaches to the binding problem -- encompassing feature binding and multisensory integration --, one of the most intriguing questions in psychology and neuroscience.

[Year 1]
The first year was devoted to studies of the unique condition relevant to "binding within a sensory modality", i.e., color-graphemic synesthesia. For the first time, Korean color-graphemic synesthetes were identified, which became a firm basis for further studies. The outcome from these efforts was reported in the research article published in the Journal of Korean Psychological Association: Cognitive and Biological.

Based on the research conditions established in the first year, further psychophysical experiments were performed. Results from the two of those experiments were presented at international conferences. In particular, the study utilizing rotated graphemes was presented at Vision Sciences Society Meeting in 2010 and submitted to an international journal. This article is now under revision after the first-round review.

In addition, the PI was invited as a keynote speaker at the 3rd International Workshop on Kansei in Japan and addressed a talk on the union of the senses in different modalities.

[Year 2]
The second year was quite active with progress of multiple studies. Outcome from a psychophysical study on synesthesia was presented at Association for the Scientific Studies of Consciousness 15). The PI was also invited as a speaker at a symposium at Neuroscience 2011 and gave a talk on synesthesia research supported by the grant.

Due to the negative results from the study " Influence of conscious awareness on synesthetic color experience", it was necessary to review the inconsistency found in the field of synesthesia research. These efforts resulted in the review article published in the Journal of Korean Psychological Association: General.
Furthermore, the work on the perceptual reality of synesthetic color was invited as a chapter in the volume "Oxford Handbook of Synesthesia" and submitted during the second year.

Considering the improved fMRI research condition at Korea University in the second year, we launched an fMRI experiment on union of the senses in different sensory modalities. Specifically, we performed a study on the influence of the implied sense in a product design on consumers’ brain and behaviors. Results showed that sensory experience in different modalities implied in visual information, though physically non-existent, recruited relevant sensory brain regions.

Work in the second year diversified research methods by adding fMRI to psychophysics and extended the range of research from basic to applied.
