세례의 신학적 의미와 케노시스적 해석

국문 초록 (Abstract)

세례는 그리스도인의 전 생애에 걸친 신앙과 영성의 여정에서 새로운 시작의 가장 결정적 계기가 되는 입회 예식이다. 본 논문은 세례의 신학적 의미를 ‘케노시스’적 관점에서 해석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 고대 교회에서 행해졌던 벗은 몸 세례 전통은 세례를 케노시스적 예식으로 이해하는 하나의 출발점이 된다. 벗은 몸 세례에 대한 고찰을 기초로 하여, 세례의 본질과 신학적 의미들 중 하나로서 특히 자기비움과 자기개방의 개념이 제시된다. 세례를 하나님과 회중들 앞에서 자기비움과 자기개방의 예식으로 해석하는 것이다. 세례에 있어서 칼빈은 죄의 회개와 씻음 그리고 공개적인 고백을 강조하고, 존 웨슬리는 성령에 의한 내적인 거듭남과 자기부정을 통한 실제적 변화의 과정인 성화에 초점을 맞추었다. 그들의 세례 이해에 있어서도 케노시스적인 의미가 중심에 있다. 케노시스는 삼위일체 하나님의 자기를 내어주는 사랑의 본질이다. 세례가 그리스도의 십자가와 부활을 통해 나타난 하나님의 사랑과 새 창조에의 참여라면 케노시스적 자기비움과 자기개방은 필수불가결한 요소이다. 따라서 세례 전 교육과 문답 그리고 세례 예식에 있어서 이러한 면이 잘 반영되도록 해야 할 것이다. 하나님의 사랑의 재현을 만들어내는 일종의 ‘포이에시스’로서의 세례 예식은 음성 언어 뿐만 아니라 적합한 기호 행위들을 통한 몸적이고 감각적인 요소의 사용을 통해 수세자들이 케노시스적 결단과 변화를 더 생생하고 감명 깊게 경험할 수 있도록 도울 수 있을 것이다. 이것은 말씀과 물의 사용의 균형을 의미하기도 한다. 세례 예식의 본질과 창조적이고 다차원적인 실천에 대한 지속적 연구를 통해 형식화된 세례와 예전은 그 감화력을 재발견하고 더 풍성하게 될 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구는 실천신학과 조직신학의 대화의 한 시도라고 할 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

For every Christian, baptism is the ritual of initiation that is the most decisive occasion for a new beginning in the lifelong journey of faith and spirituality. The purpose of this article is to interpret theological meaning of baptism in terms of kenosis. It is the tradition of ‘naked baptism’ practiced in the ancient churches that is the starting point for the understanding of baptism as a kenotic ritual. Based on the research of naked baptism, especially the concept of self-emptying and self-opening is presented as the essence of baptism as well as one of its theological implications. Baptism is the ritual of self-emptying and self-opening in front of God and congregations. Regarding baptism, Calvin emphasized repentance, washing of sins and public confession while John Wesley focused on inner regeneration by the grace of the Holy Spirit and sanctification as a process of real change through constant self-denial. Kenotic meanings are in the heart of their understanding of baptism. Kenosis is the essence of the self-giving love of the triune God. If baptism is the participation in God’s love and new creation revealed in the cross and resurrection of Christ, kenotic elements are indispensible for it. Therefore, kenotic aspects should be included in the entire process of the education of candidates, the catechesis and the baptismal rite. The ritual of baptism as a sort of poiesis that makes God’s love reproduced can help candidates more vividly and impressively to have a life-changing experience through not only the spoken word but also some adequate sign-acts using bodily and sensual elements. It implies the balance of the Word and water. Through the ongoing inquiry of the authentic meaning of Christian initiation and its creative and multidimensional practice, fossilized baptism and liturgy can rediscover its influential power and be enriched more. This article is an endeavor of dialogue between practical theology and systematic theology.
