에딩턴의 두 책상과 과학적 실재론 = Eddinton's Two Tables and Scientific Realism

Eddington`s two table discussion is about the relation between scientific table and ordinary table. Sellars renames this problem as manlfest image and scientific image and discusses their relation and ontological priority. Sellars and Tuomela argue that scientific image is more real than and ontological priority to manifest image. But it is possible to derive theory-laden observation from their argument. So it is difficult to identify the object that manifest image and scientific image refer to as same.
I argue that all observations are not theory-laden but there are theory-neutral on the basis of the interpretation of Müller-Lyer image. And I argue that scientific image has ontological priority and reliability, but manifest image has epistemological priority in the crash of scientific and manifest image. From this argument I will defend scientific realism.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

과학기술이 발달하면서 감각적 경험에 의해 그 존재를 직접 확인할 수 없는 대상들이나 과정들이 나타나게 된다. 이에 따라 과학기술의 현상들과 감각적 경험의 관계를 어떻게 설정할 것인가에 관한 철학적 논의가 나타나게 된다. 에딩턴이 이 문제에 관한 철학적 논의를 처음으로 전개하였는데 이것이 소위 ‘에딩턴의 두 책상’이다. 이 논의는 1960년대에 와서 셀라즈가 소위 ‘명시적 상과 과학적 상’으로 나누어 다시 제기하면서 철학적으로 본격적인 논의가 전개되었다. 이 논문은, 이 문제를 명시적 상과 과학적 상의 동일성 확인 문제와 이 상들의 충돌 문제로 나누어, 셀라즈와 투오멜라의 입장을 비판하고 과학적 실재론의 입장에서 내릴 수 있는 해결책과 그 정당성을 논의한다. 셀라즈와 투오멜라는 감각적 경험에 의한 직접적 인식의 우선성만을 강조하는 상식적 실재론과 도구주의 입장을 비판하고 있다. 그러나 이들의 입장은, 자신들이 과학적 실재론의 입장을 지지하고 있다고 주장하지만, 모든 관찰적 경험이 이론 의존적이라는 결론을 함축할 수 있기 때문에 과학적 실재론의 입장을 옹호하는데 다소 부족하다. 이 논문은 과학적 실재론의 입장에서, 이론에 의존하지 않는 약간의 관찰 경험이 가능하다는 사실로부터 이론에 의존하지 않고서도 명시적 상과 과학적 상의 동일성을 확인할 수 있으며, 이 상들의 충돌의 경우에도 존재론적 관점과 인식론적 관점으로 나누어, 존재론적 관점에서의 우선성이 인식론적 관점에서의 우선성보다 우월하다는 점을 주장한다.
