문화연구의 아포리아 = ‘위기담론’에 대한 반성을 중심으로

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to problematize some aporias of cultural studies in examining critically the recurrent discourse on the 'identity crisis' of Korean cultural studies. It is said that founding criticalness, political engagement and radical contextualism are on crisis in Korean cultural studies. I argue that the problem relates basically to theoretical syncretism of cultural studies. It is true that the vitality and creativity of cultural studies are owing to strategic application of various intellectual resources such as Marxism, French philosophy, sociology, semiotics, psychoanalysis, feminism, and postmodernism. However, this kind of theoretical practicalism also brought out insoluble logical problems. It makes inroads on the theoretical, epistemological basis of 'critical project' in cultural studies, and made it unstable. Precisely, combined with postmodernism and other heterogeneous theories, cultural studies takes up a position of radical relativism which stems from anti-foundationalism of 'historicism' and 'social constructivism'. This position fails to legitimize itself epistemologically and reveals fundamental weaknesses in leaving little room for political intervention and critical pedagogy. Therefore, we need to establish a long-term perspective for a new theoretical production which can surpass the self-destructing radicalism of postmodernism. The importance of this task has not been fully recognized among Korean researchers. It has even been denounced in the mood of criticism on the theory-centeredness or intellectual coloniality in Korean cultural studies. However, I insist that the theoretical efforts for overcoming relativist dilemmas are essential to rehabilitate cultural studies' pertinent critical project and to facilitate post-colonial knowledge production.
