This paper discusses 18th century British playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan. He wrote a few plays for a short period of about 4 or 5 years. He might have remained a minor writer if he had not protested against the main streams of the theatre at that time. In the 18th century England, sentimentalism prevails the theatre world as well as the literary world. Sheridan attacked sentimental plays and wrote "laughing comedies", Goldsmith's label for comedies of manners. This paper discusses two of Sheridan's plays and tries 1)to prove that Sheridan is a writer of comedies of manners; and 1)to find in his plays what is the same as and what is different from the Restoration comedies.
